American Government

The U.S. government has gone through many changes, but one thing that has remained somewhat

the same is the two-party system the United States have used since the late 1800. Many people

then and most certainly now have questioned if the two-party system harms or helps the U.S.

government to remain strong and be helpful to the people. In my opinion I can see how “the two-

party system in the U.S. has outlived its usefulness” and “the two-party system helps keep the

U.S. government strong” both have some truth to them. For instance, some historians believe the

two-party system encourages political parties to find common positions and that it will lead to

political stability and therefore economic growth, while others believe the two-part system limits

alternative views and leaves voters with less interest since there are fewer choices to chose from.

Martin P. Wattenberg wrote in the Boston Globe onSeptember 21, 2003, regarding the lack in

Americans voting, “with a number of viable parties to choose from rather than only two, people

tend to feel that their party truly embodies their specific interest and hence they are more likely

to vote.”

Multi-party governments can also permit a wider and more diverse view, but can lead to hung

parliaments which most view as undesirable, while a two-party government can be simpler to

govern and have a greater harmony. The pros and cons of a multi-party and two-party

government are more or less infinite and as a result I couldn’t exactly decide which I believed to

be most true. But as of now, the U.S. government remains to have a two-party system both liked

and unliked by American citizens and it remains to be seen if the United States’ two centuries of

two-party governing will come to an end and change for better or worse.

I wrote a poem about  the right to bear arms.

some lock it up tight,
others leave it out
and think it’s right.
with minds wrapped around a “right”
to protect themselves
from the normality they fear—
the right to shoot their son in the knee
because of the way he feels—
the right to attack someone different
because all they did was exist—
the right
to just shoot a gun
and blame it on
coincidence.
